Nico is learning things and picking up new skills so quickly. His curiosity and joy are a wonder to behold - everything is interesting to him, and he wants to learn how everything works. He loves toilet paper as much as any toy. He loves to read - he has his favorites that he likes to read again and again. Right now, it’s Zin Zin Violin, Du Iz Tak and Snowy Day. But he mixes it up, and brings over the books he wants to read. First thing in the morning, he wants to read - he doesn’t even let Derek have a sip of coffee before bringing over a book and calling, “Dada dada dada!”
At night, he still loves to dance and goose. He gives a lot of kisses. He likes to tease Derek by giving me kisses, often sweet little pecks on the mouth, while looking directly at Derek, who begs for kisses. Nico still nurses a lot at night, but sometimes can soothe himself back to sleep. It’s bittersweet, because of course waking multiple times a night is exhausting, but holding him close is so sweet. He stares deeply into my eyes, and I truly see the potential of all the universe unfolding in his gaze. He likes to play with my hair. We sleep face to face, his arms wrapped around my neck, my left arm full of pins and needles under his heavy-with-sleep body. He loves to snuggle first thing in the morning. He gives me pulsing hugs, signalling that he wants little kisses- with his arms wrapped around my head, when he pulls me in for a kiss, I am kissing his heart. It’s so sweet. A new thing that he does is sniff my hair - maybe it’s the new shampoo I got. At all times - waking up, popping up from nursing, running to me in the yard, he leans in and takes a deep whiff of my hair. Sometimes I think he uses my hair as shorthand to figure out if he’s with me or Derek, sometimes I think he just truly loves my hair. Either way, it’s a reminder that the internal life of a baby can be a true mystery, no matter how well know him.
Two nights ago, Nico did two beautiful things. First, he has been very into moving his star-projector, spaceman, around. He moved him and the light reflected on my face and hands. He looked back and forth from the spaceman to the lights on my hands and face, reaching out to touch the lights on my face with such wonder in his eyes. Going back and forth, seeming to understand that the bright light piercing out from the spaceman’s helmet was making the beautiful lights that he stares at on the ceiling. After that, the window caught his attention. It was dusk, a thunderstorm rolling in. Nico waved and grunted at the window, seeming scared. We explained storms to him - we were outside during a thunderstorm a few days ago, Nico bravely reaching off the porch to touch the rain. He kept waving toward the window and yelling, then for the first time, he pointed. Then he wanted each of us to point at the window. We all pointed, acknowledging the storm and that it could be scary, that we would hold him close and keep him safe.

Nico is growing and learning everything so quickly. He shows clear understanding of so many words and requests - bringing us things when we ask, pointing at things when we say “where is….” He also loves pointing at everything and having us say, over and over, what it is - mama, dada, wall, ceiling fan, window, mama, window, ceiling fan, box fan. We’ve been playing with playdoh a lot lately, Nico likes to smash it and cut it with his knife. Now he’s working on cutting bananas, and his playdoh scooping has paid off greatly - he’s been really successful scooping food into his mouth, even things like soup and rice that are difficult to get from his mouth (peanut butter - no problem!). I have to say, it’s truly a wonder, even with his new skills, how a fully dressed child can end up with so much rice in his diaper. And oh yeah, he’s a basketball genius.
Nico still loves books. He likes to read the same book over and over, but he mixes it up day to day. He can identify different characters (mostly animals) in his books. He can’t talk yet, but he communicates really well. He can sign (more- more, more, more, more more! Help me and milk milk). He points and grunts and babbles in the direction of things he wants, or places he wants to go. He seems to understand cause and effect. When he and Derek got covid, he was terrified of the snot sucker at first. By day two, he not only understood it, but put it up his nose, again and again. He really liked the saline mister - so either he understood that it made him feel better, or he liked the sensation (taste?!? eww) of snot running freely from his nose. Ahh toddlers.
Nico really loves animals, which isn’t surprising for a brave adventurer who spends all his time outside. Recently he started noticing all the animals in the backyard - the red birds, the hummingbirds, lizards and squirrels, who have epic battles in the tall pines. He and Buku have a lot of fun together. Sometimes Nico gets a bit rough with Buku, especially if he’s tired. He likes to drop things on him (sometimes food, sometimes balls, sometimes water bottles, eek) and sometimes touches his face too roughly. Buku gets his revenge by peeing on all of Nico’s toys.
Yesterday morning Nico woke up earrrrrrrly - 5:30 early. He hasn’t gotten up that early in a while, and it’s rough! I read Nico a couple of books, by light of Derek’s little book light (which Nico loves). He made it through a book and a half before he wanted to get up and run around the room. In a desperate attempt to keep him somewhat contained, so I didn’t have to drag my tired butt out of bed, I started making shadow puppets with the book light. I can only do a bird and a rabbit but Nico was captivated. I switched the puppet from the wall behind the bed to the wall across it. Nico stood up to go towards the shadows and wow - his own shadow! With a lot of explanation and pointing, it seemed to click for Nico that the new shadow on the wall was his. It wasn’t yet 6:30, but I woke Derek up so he could marvel with me as our beautiful Nico discovered his shadow. This morning, he woke up early again - not as early, thankfully, but early enough. Out came the books, the book light. Nico picked up the light and went toward the wall where his shadow was the night before. He held the light and spun around, trying to catch his shadow. It’s a marvel watching him grow, our sweet boy.
